Designer Oona Ritari with El Doble bag

About Mioona

“Have the guts to express your true self.”
Mioona focuses on modern urban design and unexpected material combinations, merging traditional handmade techniques with natural, renewable materials. These core principles have guided Mioona since the very beginning.
The Collection: Playful Design meets Traditional Craftsmanship
Mioona shoes feature a playful twist, combining geometric heel shapes with beautifully patterned upper materials. Crafted from unique combinations of woven textiles, hair-on-hide printed leather, suede, and top-grain leather, our footwear stands out. Most importantly, Mioona boots are never glued—the soles are stitched through, honoring traditional, durable shoemaking techniques.
Our material innovation extends to accessories: the stylish El Doble bag, inspired by traditional water carriers and saddlebags, serves as a modern, premium substitute for a backpack.
Sustainability & Global Collaboration
Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Most Mioona products are manufactured in Portugal within small, family-owned factories. We also collaborate directly with artisans and companies in East Africa to develop innovative materials from renewable resources—such as our Fisu sneakers, which are crafted from responsibly sourced Nile perch fish skin leather.
Meet the Designer: From Professional Dancer to Footwear Pioneer
My name is Oona Ritari. Born and raised in Finland, I founded Mioona Design Ltd in 2018, evolving it from a tiny collective workshop in Helsinki into the independent brand it is today.
Before entering the design world, I spent the first part of my career as a professional dancer. This background deeply influences my work: I have a profound understanding of correct body posture, weight distribution, and the precise engineering of heels—never compromising on absolute foot comfort.
My sense of aesthetics has been heavily shaped by living and working abroad, particularly in Cuba and various African countries. My studies led me to explore the rich heritage of African traditions, geometric patterns, and bold color combinations. To me, fashion should be an expression of joy—life is simply too short to walk around dressed entirely in black.
